The Claude for Startups program gives a qualifying company up to five Claude Team Premium seats free for a year, plus a one-time $1,000 API credit. Most decisions come within minutes, though manual review can take two to three business days. The part to read before you apply is what the seats cost once the year ends, because Anthropic hasn't published that. Everything below reflects Anthropic's pages as of 7 October 2026, and those pages change. For other vendor changes with dates attached, see AI model releases and pricing: what changes for engineering teams.
What the Claude for Startups program gives you
Anthropic's October 6 announcement of the expanded program describes a free year of Claude Team: "up to five Premium seats for companies new to Team." It adds a one-time $1,000 in API credits, which expire six months after they're granted. The post puts the core benefits at up to $7,000 and doesn't itemise how it gets there, so don't assume it equals any sum you can build from the pricing page.
The rest is softer. The post lists virtual office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team, support for submitting to the Claude Marketplace, a Founder House, hackathons and a newsletter. It also mentions discounts and credits worth up to $45,000 from partner companies. The sources don't say what conditions each offer carries, so read them separately. If you're after a different Anthropic offer, Anthropic's Frontier Academy is a separate program and not a startup perk.
One restriction that's easy to miss: the program page's FAQ says the credits apply to the first-party Claude API through Claude Console. They can't be used on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or other third-party platforms. If your production traffic runs through Bedrock or Vertex for data-handling or procurement reasons, the credit doesn't touch it.
Who qualifies, and whether Europe is covered
The program page says "startups founded in the last five years or funded in the last two." You don't need venture funding. The seats are for companies new to Team, so a company already paying for Team doesn't fit the offer as written.
On geography, Europe is not excluded, which is a weaker statement than "eligible." Neither the program page nor the announcement lists an allowed region. The only geography rule we found is in Anthropic's startup program terms, which bar companies established or operating in, or planning to serve people in, Belarus, China, Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Crimea, and the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics. EU and EEA countries aren't on that list. But those terms are dated May 22, 2025, which predates this expansion, so treat them as general terms and not as the rulebook for the new offer.
You'll also need a company email address that matches your website domain.
How to apply
The program page gives four steps. Sign in to Claude Console. Complete the application form, which asks for a brief project description. Most decisions come "within minutes," with manual review taking two to three business days. The decision arrives by email.
What a Premium seat includes
Anthropic's pricing page says a Premium seat has "5x more usage than standard seats." Claude Code, Cowork, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, Claude Science, Microsoft 365, @Claude, enterprise search, single sign-on and central billing are listed for the Team plan's seats generally, Standard and Premium alike. So Premium buys more usage, not extra features, and yes, the free seats include Claude Code.
"5x more usage" is vendor wording. The page gives no token figure, so you can't convert it into a number of coding sessions. Test it with your own workload before you plan around it.
What the free year is worth at list price
Team is priced for teams of 2 to 150. The table below is list-price arithmetic from the pricing page, checked on 7 October 2026. It isn't a reconstruction of Anthropic's $7,000 headline, and it's the figure you'd pay at list if you weren't in the program.
| Plan | Per seat, billed annually | Per seat, billed monthly | Five seats, 12 months (annual) | Five seats, 12 months (monthly) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | $100 per month | $125 per month | $6,000 | $7,500 |
| Standard | $20 per month | $25 per month | $1,200 | $1,500 |

What happens after year one
Not published. The announcement, the program page and the terms are all silent on what happens when the free year ends: whether seats convert to paid, whether anyone is billed automatically, or whether you have to renew by hand. Don't assume it auto-renews, and don't assume it won't. Our suggestion: ask Anthropic to confirm billing conversion in writing before you rely on the seats.
What we can do is the arithmetic at today's list prices. The same five Premium seats cost $500 a month billed annually, or $625 a month billed monthly. Five Standard seats cost $100 or $125 a month. The credit has its own clock: six months, not twelve, so it expires long before the seats do. And the terms let Anthropic "cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Program" at its sole discretion, in terms dated May 22, 2025. So year two is Anthropic's to define.
What this means for your AI tooling budget
Our judgment, not Anthropic's: apply. It costs little, a form and in most cases a decision within minutes. The risk is quieter: your team builds its habits around Claude Code seats for twelve months, then meets a bill nobody planned for.
Write the renewal date into your plan on day one, along with the $500 a month list figure for five Premium seats, and decide in advance what you'd do at that price. Five seats may also be more than a three-person team needs, and Standard at $100 a month for five seats is a very different line item. If you run on Bedrock or Vertex, plan the $1,000 credit as test money for the first-party API only, and spend it inside six months.
If you're a non-technical founder, tools don't replace the first engineering hire, and how a non-technical founder hires a first engineer is the next thing to read. For a budget view, see how seats fit a Series A engineering budget.
FAQ
Is Europe eligible for the Claude for Startups program?
Europe is not excluded, but no source we found says it's eligible. The program page and announcement name no allowed regions. The only geography rule is an excluded-country list in the 2025 terms, and EU and EEA countries aren't on it. Confirm with Anthropic if your company's location is borderline.
Does the free Team year include Claude Code?
Yes. The pricing page lists Claude Code for Team seats, Standard and Premium, and the program gives up to five Premium seats.
What happens after the free year?
Anthropic hasn't published it. The announcement, program page and terms don't say whether seats convert to paid or how billing starts. At list price, five Premium seats would cost $500 a month billed annually or $625 billed monthly.
Can I use the $1,000 credit on Bedrock or Vertex?
No. The program page says the credits apply to the first-party Claude API through Claude Console, and can't be used on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or other third-party platforms. They expire six months after grant.
Can I apply if I already use Claude Team?
The seats are for companies "new to Team," so an existing Team customer doesn't fit the offer as written. Whether an existing customer can still claim the API credit isn't stated anywhere we looked, so ask Anthropic before you assume either way.
