Gemini Code Assist end of sale: renewal dates and what to decide

Google stopped selling Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise on 9 Oct 2026. Renewal cutoffs, the Antigravity move and what to decide before term end.

Insight

The Gemini Code Assist end of sale started on 9 October 2026. Google's Gemini Code Assist sunset page says: "Starting October 9, 2026, you can no longer purchase new Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise subscriptions." Seats you already hold keep working until your contract ends, and renewal windows close on 31 January 2027 (annual) and 31 December 2027 (monthly). If your team holds these seats, the date that matters is your own contract end, not Google's.

This is a paid-tier story. In the Google results we checked on 10 October, the top pages covered the earlier consumer and free-tier shutdown, not the paid-tier renewal mechanics. The renewal mechanics for Standard and Enterprise customers are what change your budget.

What Google changed and when

The same page states that existing subscriptions "will continue to work and remain supported until the end of your contractual agreement." Everything else is a cutoff for adding or renewing.

DateWhat happens
9 October 2026New Standard and Enterprise subscriptions can no longer be purchased
31 January 2027Last day to add licences; last day annual subscriptions can auto-renew
31 December 2027Last day monthly subscriptions can auto-renew
Your contract end dateSupport for your existing subscription ends

Google's release notes for 9 October carry the same announcement ("Sale of Gemini Code Assist subscriptions is ending") and point users to Antigravity.

Which date applies to you

If you're on an annual subscription, your last renewal is whichever one falls on or before 31 January 2027. Google's wording is that you can keep auto-renewing until that date and that "after this date, annual subscriptions can't be renewed." An annual contract that renews in December 2026 can renew once more. One that renews in March 2027 can't.

Monthly subscriptions have far more runway. They can auto-renew until 31 December 2027, after which they can't be renewed.

The licence-add cutoff is the one that catches growing teams. Per the page, you can add licences until 31 January 2027, and after that "no new licenses can be added." That's a hard ceiling on headcount for anyone staying on Code Assist. If you plan to hire engineers in the first half of 2027, they can't get seats under your existing plan unless you add them before the end of January. Either buy the buffer now or plan on a different tool for new hires.

Moving to Antigravity in Gemini Enterprise

Google's stated direction is that "agentic coding assistance will be available through Antigravity," which "is included in Gemini Enterprise editions." The sunset page says the Antigravity IDE extensions include extensions for VS Code and JetBrains, and its FAQ points Gemini CLI users to an Antigravity CLI migration guide.

On eligibility, Google's AI developer tools overview says you must have a paid or free-trial subscription to the Gemini Enterprise Standard or Plus edition. The page also lists a paid Standard Emerging Market or Pay-as-you-go edition, the former only for eligible customers. So the move isn't a seat swap inside the product you already bought. It's a different subscription.

Google also lets administrators enable Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 inside Antigravity, according to the Gemini Enterprise release note for 8 October. They're off by default and billed on consumption against the project's spend cap, so they're a budget line your admins have to switch on deliberately.

Here's what Google doesn't tell you on these pages:

  • Any per-seat price for Gemini Enterprise or Antigravity. We found none on the pages we checked.
  • Data-handling terms for Antigravity. The sunset page has none.
  • Feature parity with Code Assist. Google calls Antigravity agentic coding assistance and doesn't claim it's a like-for-like replacement.

Google's overview page says Antigravity in Gemini Enterprise doesn't support these compliance certifications and security controls: Access Transparency, FedRAMP (Moderate and High), IL4 and IL5, ISO certifications including ISO 27001 and ISO 42001, ITAR, and SOC 1, SOC 2 and SOC 3. If you work under SOC 2 or ISO 27001, check that before you plan the move.

Migrate or re-tender

Your contract end date sets the pace. If you have a year or more left, you have time to run a proper comparison. If you're on an annual plan that renews before 31 January, you're making a decision now: take a final renewal, or let it lapse and move.

Ask your Google account team, in writing:

  1. What is the per-seat price for the Gemini Enterprise edition that includes Antigravity, and what's the minimum term?
  2. What are the data-handling and retention terms for code sent through Antigravity?
  3. How do the unsupported compliance certifications and security controls listed on the overview page affect our obligations?
  4. Can we add licences after 31 January 2027 on the new product, and on what terms?
  5. Is a migration of Code Assist seats credited toward the new subscription?

Those are our questions, not Google's published positions. Without answers, you can't compare Antigravity against what you pay today or against other tools. A bake-off with a fixed task set and cycle-time measures does that job. Our guide to measuring AI coding tool ROI covers the baseline and cohort-comparison side of that measurement. For context on how widely Antigravity is used, our breakdown of JetBrains' 2026 developer survey puts it at 6% of respondents, the lowest share in its table, which is a reason to test it with your own code before you trust it.

This isn't the only vendor deadline on an admin's calendar. GitHub's Copilot model deprecations take effect on 19 October.

A 30/60/90-day plan before your renewal

Work backwards from your own contract end, or from 31 January 2027 if you're annual. By our arithmetic, 90 days before 31 January is 2 November 2026. For monthly plans, 90 days before 31 December 2027 is 2 October 2027.

At T-90, inventory seats: who has one, who used it in the last month, who has left. Find the contract end date and the renewal clause. Send the written questions above.

At T-60, run the bake-off on two or three real repositories with a small group. Compare against current Code Assist usage.

At T-30, decide and sign. After the cutoff for your plan type, Google says the subscription can't be renewed, so sign before it.

What this means for your AI tooling renewal

The decision is one of three: renew once more while you can, migrate to Antigravity in Gemini Enterprise, or re-tender to another vendor. Our judgment is that annual customers renewing before 31 January shouldn't take a long final term without written answers on price, data terms and compliance exclusions. A final renewal locks you into a product Google has stopped selling, with a hard end date you'll have to plan around again.

Monthly customers can wait longer, but Google's page gives the 31 January 2027 licence-add cutoff once, without splitting it by plan type, so we read it as applying to monthly plans too. Confirm with your account team, and if you expect to hire, settle seat count before that date.

Send the written questions at T-90, decide by T-30 before your contract end, and record who owns the call. For the cost side of the comparison, start with AI coding tools cost per developer versus hiring one.

More coverage of vendor changes like this is on the hub, AI model releases and pricing: what changes for engineering teams.

FAQ

Do my Gemini Code Assist seats stop working?

No. Google says existing subscriptions "will continue to work and remain supported until the end of your contractual agreement." What stops is buying new subscriptions, adding licences after 31 January 2027, and renewing after the cutoff for your plan type.

Can I still add developers to my plan?

Yes, until 31 January 2027. After that date, no new licences can be added.

Do I have to move to Gemini Enterprise?

Not yet. Your current subscription runs to contract end. Google's stated path afterward is Antigravity, included in Gemini Enterprise editions, and the sunset page tells you to plan the transition before your plan reaches its final renewal or contract end date.

What replaces Gemini CLI?

Google points Gemini CLI users to an Antigravity CLI migration guide, linked from the sunset page's FAQ. Check that guide for what carries over.

Is Antigravity cheaper than Gemini Code Assist?

We can't say. Google doesn't publish a per-seat price on the pages we checked, so ask your account team for a written quote before comparing.
