Why day rates dominate
Fractional CTO work is rhythm-bound: a 2-day-per-week engagement means two full days of executive focus, not 16 hours scattered across a week. Day rates make scope conversations honest. "How many days this month?" replaces "how many hours did you log?", the right question for executive work.
2026 European day-rate bands
- UK: £900–£1,800/day
- DACH: €1,200–€2,200/day
- Nordics: €1,200–€2,000/day
- Netherlands: €1,100–€1,900/day
- Iberia: €800–€1,500/day
- CEE: €700–€1,400/day
When the upper band applies
- AI/ML platform experience
- Regulated-industry CTO history (banking, health, defence)
- Public-company exit on the CV
- Pre-fundraise engagements with a fixed deliverable window
- Post-CTO-exit emergency replacement engagements
When the lower band applies
- Pre-seed companies with no revenue
- Equity-heavy compensation structures
- 12-month-plus commitments with volume discount
- Repeat engagements through the same network
